The AD Crew

A standard AD Department is comprised of:

1^st AD

Makes the schedule in prep by breaking down the script into workable chunks. Works closely with the director to make sure everything they want will be there during each filming day. During production they keep the crew on the same pace to complete each day and stay on that schedule.

2^nd AD

Helps the 1^st AD with the schedule in prep. Plans for Background Artist counts, cast schedules and dressing rooms, delegates PAs. During production, the schedule is handed off to them to keep eyes on to make sure nothing is forgotten during the hectic process of filming. They also make the call sheet for each work day.

2^nd 2^nd AD

Right hand of the 1^st AD. On set, knows the whole crew, works with the Key PA to delegate Additional PAs, helps keep the 1^st AD’s desired pace, and works with the Director to set actions for Background Artists. 

Key PA

Right hand of the 2^nd 2^nd AD. Sets lockups, facilitates communication between the DP, 1^st AD, and Director using PAs if everyone is spread out, delegates PAs when tasks need doing.

Basecamp PA (LA & 3^rd Area)

Gets the cast through the Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe process in the morning and throughout the day. Gets cast to and from set on time for the 1^st AD and camera. Works with the 2^nd AD to make sure the Exhibit G is correct for the cast’s daily work. Also assists the ADs with paperwork.

1st Team Runner PA (NYC)

Gets the cast through the Hair, Makeup, and Wardrobe process in the morning and throughout the day. Gets cast to and from set on time for the 1^st AD and camera. Works with the 2^nd AD to make sure the Exhibit G is correct for the cast’s daily work.

1st Team PA (LA & 3rd Area) / 1st Team Helper PA (NYC)

Backup for Basecamp or 1st Team Runner PAs.

Background PA

Gets all of the Background Artists for the day checked in, vouchered, dressed, approved by HMU/Ward, to/from set on time for the 1^st and 2^nd 2^nd ADs, and wrapped out.

Paperwork PA (NYC)

In charge of all things paperwork. Timecards, Startwork, Reports, Package distro, the Production Report (PR), etc.

Walkie PA

Tracks the entire walkie package for a production from Day 1 through the last day of filming. Does inventory, reports lost or damaged items, communicates a lot with the UPM and 2^nd AD.

Additional PAs

Varies per project and per work day. The more complex the day, and the bigger the budget, the more additional PAs you may see. Lockups, water/coffee runs, firewatches, cues, camera communication, backup for all PA roles, anything.
